Stuart’s New Mandolin – A Special Find.

Stuart has recently acquired a new (to him) mandolin, and it’s something quite special, a dark sunburst Model A (without a scroll) built by Tom Ellis of Houston in 2009. Interestingly, that year also holds personal significance for Stuart, making the instrument all the more meaningful.

As far as Stuart is aware, there are no others like it currently in the UK. This particular mandolin came via Philip Alexander at John Alvey Turner in Camden. Stuart had originally gone in to look at an Apitius, but when Phil mentioned he had an Ellis, the decision quickly became an easy one.

Tom Ellis is widely regarded as one of the leading modern American mandolin makers, known for producing a small number of meticulously hand-built instruments. His work draws on traditional designs while delivering exceptional tonal balance, clarity, and responsiveness, qualities that have made his instruments highly sought after by serious players and collectors.

This mandolin clearly reflects that reputation. The craftsmanship, tone, and overall feel are exceptional, with a depth, clarity, and responsiveness that make it a real pleasure to play.

It’s already proving to be a special instrument, and one Stuart is looking forward to enjoying for many years to come.
