Playing Classical Guitar Without Nails

Exploring a forgotten tradition with Lauderdale Guitar Society member Steven Watson

Most classical guitarists today play with fingernails, using them to shape the sound and projection of their instrument. But did you know that some of the greatest guitarists in history played without nails, using only the flesh of their fingertips?

Lauderdale Guitar Society member Steven Watson is researching this fascinating and sometimes controversial aspect of classical guitar playing, exploring its history, technique and relevance to modern musicians.

For anyone curious about playing classical guitar without nails, Steven has produced video material exploring the history, techniques and musical possibilities of this approach.

Watch Steven's video below for an introduction to the subject.

A Different Approach to Classical Guitar

Playing classical guitar without fingernails, often called no-nail guitar technique or flesh playing, has a long and distinguished history.

Although nail playing dominates modern classical guitar performance, important historical figures including Fernando Sor, Francisco Tárrega and Emilio Pujol embraced playing without nails.

The two approaches offer different possibilities for tone, touch and musical expression.

Players who favour no-nail technique often appreciate its warm, rounded sound and the direct physical connection between fingertip and string. Others are drawn to its historical significance or find it a practical alternative to maintaining fingernails.

Neither approach is inherently superior. Both belong to the rich tradition of classical guitar performance.

Steven Watson and His Research

Steven Watson is a guitarist, composer, writer and researcher, currently undertaking doctoral research at the International Guitar Research Centre at the University of Surrey, under the supervision of composer and guitarist Stephen Goss.

His research investigates the history and technique of classical guitar playing without fingernails, examining the musicians, teaching traditions and changing attitudes that have shaped this approach over the centuries.

Steven has presented research at international guitar conferences and has published articles exploring historical and practical aspects of no-nail playing.

His work challenges the assumption that fingernails are essential to classical guitar performance and encourages guitarists to reconsider the instrument's remarkable diversity of sound and technique.

We are delighted to have Steven as a member of the Lauderdale Guitar Society and to share his research with the wider guitar community.
